I can’t believe Wednesday is upon us again. This week I have chosen:
Tollins: Explosive Tales for Children (Hardcover)
by Conn Iggulden (author) and Lizzy Duncan (illus)
This is another fantastically illustrative book. I hadn’t heard of Lizzy Duncan before coming across this book but after doing a little research I found her to be a very artistic, light hearted lady who doesn’t take her work too seriously.
According to the HarperCollins children’s website she was a founding member of the “Tollins in Art” program, where inner-city schoolchildren are taken to the countryside by bus and encouraged to paint and observe Tollins in their natural habitats. This is her first illustrated book. Lizzy’s abstract paintings of Tollins are much sought after whenever one appears at Sotheby’s auction house, and she is very active in promoting Tollin rights and registering them as a protected wetland species—or as a dryland species, if the weather’s been good. http://www.harpercollinschildrens.com/Kids/AuthorsAndIllustrators/ContributorDetail.aspx?CId=35662
Her illustrations are unassuming and paint a vivid picture of the life of a ‘tollin’.
Of course Conn Iggulden needs no introduction. His adult fiction is always popular and he is the co-author of the ‘Dangerous Book for Boys…’ among other titles.
So what’s the book about, other than these strange creatures called tollin’s that come from far away realms? Well it seems this book is all about the tollin’s; not quite fairies but not quite anything else. They’re delicate creatures but they sure pack a punch in the three magical tales told in this book, perfectly complemented by the vivid illustrations and elusive diagrams and maps throughout.
If you want a book that will carry the kids away to a magical land of nonsensical fun then this is the book for you. Conn Iggulden and Lizzy Duncan make a wonderful pairing here and I really hope there is more to come in the future.
